Phylogenetic relationships of necrogenic Erwinia and Brenneria species as revealed by glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene sequences.

Recent examination of the relationships of the dry necrosis-inducing (necrogenic) erwinias using 16S rDNA sequences demonstrated that these bacteria comprise a polyphyletic group and, therefore, have been subdivided into three distinct genera, Erwinia, Brenneria and Pectobacterium, with the classical 'amylovora' group species now being distributed nearly evenly among the first two. To further a...

Acetyl phosphate formation catalyzed by glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidative phosphorylation of n-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1,3-diphosphoglyceric acid (1, 2). The enzyme also catalyzes the oxidation of n-glyceraldehyde, although the product of this reaction has not been characterized (1,2). In the present study it is shown that acetaldehyde (3), propionaldehyde, and butyraldehyde also act as substrates...

Evolution: The Case of the Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Gene

The enzyme Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (GAPDH) catalyses the decomposition of glucose. The gene that produces the GAPDH is therefore present in a wide class of organisms. We show that for this gene the average value of the fluctuations in nucleotide distribution in the codons, normalized to strand bias, provides a reasonable measure of how the gene has evolved in time.

Sperm glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene expression in asthenozoospermic spermatozoa

It has been suggested that the energy required for sperm motility is produced by oxidative phosphorylation while glycolysis seems to be an important source for ATP transmission along the flagellum. Some studies have investigated the chemical and kinetic properties of the enzyme glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase to identify any changes in the regulation of glycolysis and sperm motility. I...

Insulin stimulates glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene expression through cis-acting DNA sequences.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase [GAPDH; D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate:NAD+ oxidoreductase (phosphorylating), EC 1.2.1.12] mRNA levels are induced by physiologic concentrations of insulin in cultured 3T3-F442A adipocyte and H35 hepatoma cell lines. To examine the mechanism by which insulin regulates GAPDH mRNA levels in these two insulin-sensitive tissues, we have isolated a functional h...
